Ball Python Care Guide

What kind of enclosure does my ball python need?

To create a ball python enclosure, you will need:

Ball pythons require a warm, moist environment to thrive. The tank should be 80F on the cooler side of the tank and 90F on the warm spot. Keep the humidity between 60%-70%. They require belly heat for digestion and high humidity. For this reason, we do not recommend using heat lamps.

How do I care for my ball python?

Ball pythons require very little care. Check on your snake every few days to make sure it has water and it’s temperature and humidity are appropriate.

Feeding

Ball pythons eat once per week. Feed your ball python a rodent (mouse, rat, or ASF) that is the same size or a little wider than the widest part for your snake. They can be fed live rodents or frozen/thawed.

Handling

Ball pythons no not require any certain amount of handling to thrive. However, the more you handle your ball python, the friendlier it will be. Always wash your hands before and after handling. Do not handle your ball python for 24-48 hours after it has eaten. Doing so can cause it to regurgitate, which can be dangerous.

Shedding

When your ball pythons begins to look cloudy or develops a pink belly, it is in shed. Shedding last for 7-10 days. During this time, it is important to keep the humidity high to help it shed properly. Your snake will likely be less active and more defensive during this time. Handling should be kept to a minimum.

If your snake does not completely shed it’s skin, soaking with help. Fill a container with water deep enough for the snake to submerge it’s body, leaving room at the top for air and ventilation. Place a lid on the container and leave the snake in for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Then, remove your snake and use your hands or a damp cloth to rub away the shed.
